Float

A float is a mechanism used in a toilet bowl to regulate the water level in the bowl. It consists of a metal or plastic arm with a rubber or plastic bag (the float) attached to it. When the toilet is flushed, the float in the bowl drops, causing water to flow from the tank into the bowl. When the water level in the pot is high enough, the float rises again, shutting off the water supply. This prevents overflow.

Float moves slowly or sticks

If a float moves slowly or sticks, it can be for several reasons:

The float is clogged: Dirt or hard water minerals may have accumulated in the float, preventing the mechanism from functioning properly. The float is damaged: If the float is damaged, it may no longer move properly or the bag is leaking. The float cable is jammed: The float cable connects the float to the flush handle. If it jams, the float can no longer move properly. The float is not at the correct height: The float must be at the correct height in the toilet bowl, otherwise it will not function properly.

To determine the cause, it is recommended to first empty the reservoir and remove, clean or replace the float. Then you can install the float at the correct height and check the cable.

Faster replacement costs

The cost to replace a float can vary depending on the location, the size of the toilet and the type of float you want to replace. In many cases, a standard float that needs to be replaced will cost around $10 to $30. If you're replacing a more advanced float or additional labor is required, such as adjusting the piping, the price can add up. It is best to hire a plumber to replace a float as this is specialist work. The costs for a plumber can vary, but you can often count on it being fixed within hours. Our rates.
